Overview

In Agios Ambrosios, Limassol district, a traditional building houses the newly established Sports Museum "Nenikikamen" dedicated to the athletes who excelled in the track of freedom during the 55-59 Liberation Struggle, to the football legends of the First Mixed Cyprus and early ambassadors of the newly established Cypriot state and to the worthy continuators of the long historical tradition of Cypriot athletes in the Olympic Games. In a relay of memory and honor, through rare photographic and sporting material, the largely unknown aspect of EOKA's heroic athletes, such as Grigoris Afxentiou, Evagoras Pallikaridis, Michalakis Karolis, Antonis Papadopoulos, Ionas Nikolaou, Tasos Markou and others, is recorded. Next to them, the amateur footballers of the first Cyprus national team who - under the guidance of Argyris Gavalas - were called upon to carry the aspirations and hopes of an entire nation in the first steps of the Republic of Cyprus. With them, the continuators of our country's sporting tradition, the athletes who held high the Cypriot flag at the modern Olympic Games, for the first time in Moscow in 1980. The project is part of the National Strategy for the Development of Mountain Communities (ESAOK) and was implemented by the Ayios Amvrosiou Community Council, the Cyprus Association of Olympic Games Participants and the First Cyprus National Football Team Initiative Group, with the support of the Office of the Commissioner for the Development of Mountain Communities and the EOKA 1955-59 Historical Commemoration Council. The inauguration of the "Nenikikamen" Museum was held on 27 November at 10:30 a.m. by the Minister of Interior Mr. Nikos Nouris, preceded by a blessing by His Eminence Metropolitan George of Pafos.
